YouTube updates gaming violence rules ahead of GTA 6 release
YouTube has updated its advertiser-friendly guidelines regarding violent gameplay, a move seen as preparation for the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The new policy focuses on the timing of graphic content within a video.
Under the revised rules, graphic gaming violence—such as depictions of blood, dismemberment, or serious injuries—shown within the first seven seconds of a video can still render the content ineligible for monetization. However, if such scenes occur between the eight and 15-second marks, creators may still earn limited advertising revenue rather than facing total demonetization. Content appearing after 15 seconds is generally eligible for regular monetization, provided it meets other safety standards.
Despite this flexibility, YouTube maintains strict prohibitions on certain types of content. Videos primarily designed to shock viewers through repetitive violence, as well as content featuring graphic torture, sexual violence, hate-motivated attacks, or violence involving minors, remain ineligible for advertising. The platform also noted that blurred or obscured violent imagery is more likely to remain eligible for monetization.
