YouTube redesigns mobile interface and introduces AI custom feeds
YouTube is implementing a major overhaul of its mobile application interface, marking the first significant structural change in nearly a decade. A primary update involves moving the ‘Subscriptions’ tab—which has resided on the bottom navigation bar since 2017—to a new top navigation bar, where it will appear as ‘Subs’ alongside categories such as ‘Live’, ‘Music’, and ‘Movies & TV’.
The redesign also introduces ‘Custom Feeds’, a feature powered by generative AI. Users can create personalized content streams by typing natural language descriptions, such as ‘meditation videos for relaxation’ or ‘30-minute travel podcasts’. This allows for content discovery based on specific moods or topics rather than relying solely on algorithmic recommendations. Free users can save up to three custom feeds, while YouTube Premium subscribers can create up to eight.
While the new interface layout is rolling out in various regions, the AI-driven Custom Feeds feature is currently limited to users in the United States who use the app in English and are over 13 years old.
