YouTube updates public view counting methodology

YouTube has updated its public view counting methodology, a change that began on August 24. Under the new system, a public view is recorded as soon as the first frame of a video appears on screen, including when videos play automatically in a user's feed. Previously, public view counters for long-form videos typically required approximately 30 seconds of effective viewing.

This update aligns the measurement of long-form videos, live streams, and Shorts. While this change will cause a rapid increase in displayed public view counts, it does not reflect an increase in actual viewer attention or change creator revenue. YouTube continues to track “engaged views” and “engaged watch time” in the background via YouTube Studio. These engaged metrics, which require actual viewing duration, remain the primary indicators for monetization and Partner Program eligibility.

For brands and media buyers, the shift necessitates a re-evaluation of campaign performance indicators. An analysis of 75,000 videos showed a significant gap between public and engaged views, with public views outnumbering engaged views by an average of 1.67 to 1. Because autoplay and feed recommendations generate many public views that do not result in engagement, relying solely on public view counts may distort the perceived value of advertising partnerships.
