Yovkovtsi Reservoir illegal camping site discovered in protection zone

An illegal camping site has been discovered within the sanitary protection zone of the Yovkovtsi Reservoir near the village of Shilkovtsi, Bulgaria. A joint inspection involving the Veliko Tarnovo Regional Governor, Marin Bogomilov, and water utility officials revealed a fenced-off area equipped with security cameras, warning signs, caravans, tents, boats, and a barbecue area.

The Danube River Basin Directorate has stated that parking and placing caravans or other structures in this zone is strictly prohibited to protect the reservoir, which serves as a vital source of drinking water for residents across nine municipalities. Authorities expressed concern that the unauthorized activities pose a significant risk of contaminating the water supply.

While some local residents have questioned whether the camping activities truly threaten water quality, officials have moved to take action. Governor Bogomilov has ordered the formation of an inter-agency expert commission to conduct a full inspection of the reservoir and indicated that all identified violations will be referred to the prosecutor's office.
