Yoyogi Animation Academy to launch Costume Design Department

Yoyogi Animation Academy has announced the establishment of a new Costume Design Department, scheduled to open in April 2027. The program is a collaboration with Shinobu Kayano, a prominent costume designer known for her work with idol groups such as AKB48, =LOVE, ≠ME, and ≒JOY.

The curriculum aims to train professionals for the entertainment industry, including idols, VTubers, and 2.5D performers. Unlike traditional fashion programs, this department will focus on strategic planning, digital design skills, and practical considerations such as how costumes appear under stage lighting or on camera. Students will learn to create designs that enhance a performer's individuality and align with a group's brand.

Kayano will supervise the curriculum and teach classes biweekly, providing direct feedback to students. The academy intends to leverage its position as a content holder to provide practical learning opportunities, allowing students to see how designs translate to real-world stage productions. During a recent announcement, =LOVE member Emiri Otani appeared in new costumes designed by Kayano to demonstrate the impact of professional stage attire.
