Yozgat chickpea production expected to reach 57,000 tons

Chickpea harvesting is nearing completion in Yozgat, Turkey, with production expected to reach approximately 57,000 tons this season. This represents a significant increase from the previous year, when drought conditions reduced production to 41,210 tons.

While rainfall throughout the season has positively influenced crop development, intermittent hail has caused localized damage to chickpeas and lentils in certain areas. However, because much of the harvest was completed before the hail, officials report that there has been no widespread loss of produce across the province.

Data from the Yozgat Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry indicates that while the total area planted with chickpeas decreased to 493,589 decares for the upcoming season from 586,078 decares last year, the improved rainfall has bolstered overall yields. In 2024, Yozgat ranked second in Turkey for chickpea production with 72,131 tons, following Ankara (92,944 tons) and preceding Konya (50,571 tons).
