Ypê manufacturer launches recovery campaign after contamination scandal
Química Amparo, the manufacturer of the Ypê brand, has launched a new marketing campaign focused on “trust,” “seriousness,” and “transparency” following a major contamination scandal. This move comes two months after Anvisa, Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency, suspended the production and sale of several products, including Ypê detergent and Tixan Ypê laundry detergent, due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination.
Instead of issuing a public apology, the company has opted for a strategy of gratitude toward consumers and has introduced promotional activities, such as the “Meu Ypê Premiado” sweepstakes, to rebuild its reputation. Analysts suggest this calculated decision aims to demonstrate resilience rather than explicitly admitting fault.
The product recall has significantly impacted retail shelves. In some supermarket chains, such as Dia Brasil, the absence of Ypê products has led to a shift in consumer behavior. Retailers are filling the gaps with private-label brands to cater to price-sensitive customers or stocking traditional competitors like Limpol to satisfy those prioritizing perceived safety. Dia Brasil confirmed it initiated internal protocols for the preventive removal of impacted items across its stores.
