YPFB implements new controls to combat Bolivia fuel crisis
Bolivia is facing a significant fuel crisis characterized by diesel shortages, irregular fuel stockpiling, and systemic control failures within the state-owned oil company, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB).
Authorities have identified that 22 million liters of fuel were diverted during a recent intervention. To combat these irregularities and improve traceability, YPFB has implemented a new online monitoring system to track fuel from assignment to service stations in real time. This follows reports of illegal stockpiling and resale at inflated prices.
In response to the shortage, YPFB plans to increase crude oil refining by 10,000 barrels per day, a move projected to generate $49 million annually. This strategy aims to utilize underperforming refineries in Cochabamba and Santa Cruz to increase the national diesel supply. Meanwhile, the Chamber of Agro-Industrial Producers (CAO) has called for opening the fuel market to private sector participation in importing and refining to ensure consistent supply.
