Ypsilanti Township ICE arrest draws crowd and police intervention
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan, led to a large crowd gathering on West Michigan Avenue on Wednesday morning. During the incident, community members presented a green card for one of the individuals being arrested, resulting in that person's release at the scene.
Following the arrest, an ICE agent contacted 911 to request assistance, reporting that the gathering crowd was preventing agents from leaving and creating an unsafe environment. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene to de-escalate the situation, after which ICE agents departed.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office issued a statement clarifying that deputies did not participate in immigration enforcement, noting that the office does not honor voluntary ICE detainers or cooperate with immigration enforcement actions. Officials stated their role was limited to maintaining public safety and de-escalating the situation.
