Andhra Pradesh local body elections marred by nomination violence

The nomination process for local body elections in Andhra Pradesh has been marked by widespread violence and clashes between supporters of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). According to Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, at least 31 incidents of violence, clashes, and the snatching or tearing of nomination papers were reported across 13 districts.

Specific incidents included stone pelting, arson of vehicles, and attacks on residential properties. In one instance, a police constable was seriously injured when a vehicle transporting candidates was pelted with stones. The violence affected candidates from the TDP, YSRCP, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), as well as independent candidates.

YSRCP leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has accused the ruling NDA government of failing to honor Supreme Court directives and has called for the appointment of an amicus curiae to supervise the polls. He also demanded the deployment of central forces and CCTV coverage to ensure transparency. Conversely, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has accused the YSRCP of engaging in “criminal politics” to disrupt the electoral process and damage the state’s image.
