YSR Congress moves Supreme Court over Andhra Pradesh election nomination deadline
The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking an extension of the nomination deadline for the upcoming urban local body elections in Andhra Pradesh. The party alleges that “mass violence” and physical obstructions prevented its candidates from filing their papers between October 16 and October 18.
According to the petition, incidents of violence occurred in Punganur, Rayachoti, Kadapa, and Tirupati. Specific allegations include the snatching and tearing of a candidate's papers in Kadapa, assaults on candidates in Tirupati, and an attack on a convoy involving YSRCP MP PV Mithun Reddy. The party is also requesting the designation of additional nomination centres.
The legal challenge follows a decision by the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which refused to grant a one-day extension, stating that the nomination period had expired and that intervening would interfere with the election process. The YSRCP argues that judicial intervention is necessary when the democratic process is being thwarted. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the plea on October 21, which coincides with the final date for the withdrawal of candidature. Polling is set for October 28.
