Yết Kiêu: The legendary Vietnamese naval general

Yết Kiêu (1242–1301), born Phạm Hữu Thế, was a renowned naval general of the Tran Dynasty in Vietnam. Coming from a poor fishing family, he developed exceptional diving and swimming skills that became vital to his military service.

During the Mongol invasions of Đại Việt, Yết Kiêu served under the command of Hưng Đạo Vương Trần Quốc Tuấn. He was famous for his ability to dive deep and hold his breath for long periods, allowing him to swim beneath enemy vessels to puncture their hulls before escaping undetected.

Historical folklore also highlights a notable anecdote regarding his diplomatic travels. While accompanying a Vietnamese embassy to the Yuan Dynasty, the Yuan Emperor reportedly expressed admiration for his talent and offered to marry him to a princess. Yết Kiêu responded by stating that such a marriage would require the decision of the King of Đại Việt.
