Yuba City to close Sam Brannan Park for security upgrades

Yuba City officials have announced the temporary closure of Sam Brannan Park, effective September 1, to implement security upgrades. The 8-acre park has seen a significant rise in police service calls, including nearly 150 incidents in the first five months of this year, involving drug use, assaults, and vandalism.

The Yuba City Council approved $265,000 for the project, which includes the installation of cameras, improved lighting, fencing, and electronic gate access. Mayor Marc Boomgaarden described the closure as a temporary step to recapture the park for public enjoyment and noted plans to include a dog park.

The decision has met resistance from residents experiencing homelessness who use the park as a place to stay. Some individuals have expressed anger over the closure and indicated they may attempt to bypass new security measures.
