Yucatán and Tamaulipas Report Surge in Feminicide Cases

In Yucatán, state authorities recorded 52 gender‑related murders between 2018 and 2026, averaging about six femicides per year. Only 67% of those cases progressed to judicial proceedings, and investigations took an average of 36 months. Victims ranged from 3 to 92 years old, with the majority of reports filed in Mérida and surrounding municipalities.

In Tamaulipas, the number of femicides reached new highs for two consecutive years: 16 cases were logged in 2023, 23 in 2024, and 24 in 2025, with an additional four reported in early 2026. The state also ranks second nationally for missing women and has the highest rate of unlocated girls. Despite the rising toll, authorities have secured only one criminal conviction for these crimes.

Both states illustrate a broader Mexican crisis of gender‑based violence marked by delayed investigations, low conviction rates, and growing public concern.
