Yucatán completes massive mosquito fumigation campaign across 106 municipalities

The Yucatán State Health Secretariat (SSY) completed a large‑scale mosquito fumigation campaign from 3 to 17 June, covering all 106 municipalities of the state. The operation treated 30,203 hectares using 40 equipped vehicles and 509 brigadistas from the Vector Program, aiming to reduce the adult Aedes aegypti population that transmits dengue, Zika and chikungunya. The effort protected more than 2.3 million residents and was carried out as a preventive response to heavy early‑month rains that created favorable breeding conditions. Health Secretary Miguel Alberto Alcocer Gamboa emphasized that, although the extraordinary operation has ended, fumigation and broader vector‑control measures will continue year‑round as part of a permanent strategy mandated by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena. Residents were urged to adopt the “Lava, tapa, voltea y tira” approach—cleaning water containers, covering them, turning over unused objects and discarding potential breeding sites—to complement the official actions.
