Yucatán recognizes Maya traditional midwifery as living heritage
More than 150 traditional midwives from Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo gathered for the Peninsular Encounter of Ancestral Knowledge Exchange, a dialogue between health authorities and guardians of Maya cultural heritage. Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena’s administration, under the “Renacimiento Maya” program, officially recognized traditional midwifery as a living heritage of the Maya people.
Health Secretary Miguel Alberto Alcocer Gamboa inaugurated the event on the governor’s behalf and announced a series of policy actions: the creation of a State Midwifery Committee to coordinate traditional midwives with public health services, and the launch of the El Vía Carrillo Puerto Card to provide direct support to midwives. The government highlighted that from 2020 to 2026 no maternal deaths were recorded in births attended by traditional midwives, and that about 327 midwives are now registered in the state. These measures are being implemented in line with the Mexican Official Standard NOM‑020 to ensure culturally appropriate maternal and neonatal care.
