Yucatán Governor Starts Solar Irrigation and Primary School Scholarship Initiative

Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena of Yucatán inaugurated 119 solar‑powered irrigation systems under the Programa de Infraestructura Hidroagrícola Solar, covering 254 hectares this year with an investment of 16 million pesos. The state plans to spend more than 100 million pesos on the scheme in 2026, building on last year's installation of systems on 2,286 hectares that benefitted 1,043 producers.

At the same ceremony, 2,133 Rita Cetina Gutiérrez scholarship cards were distributed to primary‑school students, with the rollout set to reach 37,904 cards across Mérida and other municipalities by July 8. The scholarships provide cash deposits from August for school supplies, uniforms and shoes. The programs, overseen by the Secretaría de Desarrollo Rural (SEDER) and its head Edgardo Medina Rodríguez, aim to boost agricultural productivity, reduce energy costs, and support inclusive education in the face of drought risks.
