Yucatán grapples with deteriorating roads and accelerating beach erosion

In the city of Kanasín, residents report that potholes on Calle 13 have become severe, especially after recent heavy rains. The municipal administration, led by Mayor Edwin Bojórquez Ramírez, has not undertaken repairs for over two years despite complaints and temporary fixes by locals.

Along Yucatán’s northern coast, beach erosion is intensifying. Biologist Paolo Salles attributes the loss to rising sea levels—about 2.5 mm per year—and to human-made structures such as ports, breakwaters and private coastal protections that disrupt natural sediment flow. The coastline has receded up to 100 m over the past four decades, and experts suggest continuous sediment‑transfer systems and redesign of existing infrastructure to restore balance.

Both issues highlight growing infrastructure challenges in the state, urging coordinated action among authorities, specialists and the community.
