Yucatán health officials launch hand‑washing drive and Wolbachia mosquito program

The Yucatán State Health Secretariat urged residents to intensify proper hand‑washing with soap and water during the rainy season, highlighting it as a key measure to curb gastrointestinal and respiratory infections that rise with higher humidity. The campaign advises washing hands before eating, after bathroom use, and after contact with potentially contaminated surfaces, and encourages prompt medical attention for symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, persistent cough or breathing difficulty.

At a national forum on dengue and other arboviral diseases, Yucatán officials presented their Wolbachia‑based mosquito strategy, describing it as a complementary tool to reduce transmission of dengue, chikungunya and related viruses. The presentation emphasized integrated surveillance, community participation, vector control and scientific innovation, and noted coordination with federal health authorities to monitor the spread of the Cosmopolitan DENV‑2 genotype and chikungunya cases across Mexico.
