Yucatán inaugurates ‘Miradas femeninas’ exhibition

The Secretariat of Culture and the Arts of Yucatán (Sedeculta) has inaugurated the exhibition ‘Miradas femeninas. Cultura material y representaciones de América Latina y el Caribe’ at the Biblioteca Yucatanense. The exhibit aims to highlight the historical and daily roles of Maya and Caribbean women whose contributions to sustaining life and community have often been omitted from formal history books.

The exhibition is part of the European GEMO project (Gender and Mobilities), which examines women as transmitters of information, ideas, and products in Hispanic America from the 18th century to the present. The project is funded by the Institute for Women of the Ministry of Equality of Spain.

Curated in Yucatán by Ana Elvira Cervera Molina, the display integrates visual works with poetry from various Latin American and Caribbean authors, including Elisa Chavarrea, Briceida Cuevas, Gabriela Mistral, Gioconda Belli, and Una Marson. The collection seeks to address historical absences and celebrate the essential labor of women in tasks such as caregiving and food preparation.
