Yucatán intensifies efforts to achieve malaria-free certification
The Yucatán Ministry of Health (SSY) is intensifying epidemiological surveillance and prevention efforts to certify the state as malaria-free. While Yucatán has not recorded indigenous cases of the parasitic disease in over 20 years, health brigades are actively monitoring for imported cases.
Prevention strategies focus on interrupting potential chains of contagion from imported cases, which may arise due to migratory flows or individuals coming from regions with active transmission. High-risk groups include foreign fishermen arriving at the coast during the Maya octopus harvesting season.
Active search activities, sampling, and health promotion have been conducted in areas such as Progreso, Chelem, Chuburná, Chicxulub, and Yucalpetén. Ongoing efforts are also directed toward Sisal, Dzilam de Bravo, and Celestún to maintain permanent control over Anopheles mosquito populations in vulnerable coastal zones.
