Yucatán launches Vocal, Mexico’s first international contemporary art biennial
Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena has announced the Bienal de Yucatán, titled ‘Vocal’, which will serve as Mexico’s first large-scale international contemporary art biennial. Scheduled to run from November 26, 2026, through February 28, 2027, the event will feature 76 national and international artists across 16 venues in Mérida and Maní.
The inaugural edition focuses on themes of language, communication, translation, and silence, specifically placing the Mayan language at the center of a global artistic dialogue. Artistic director Abraham Cruzvillegas will oversee the curation, which includes works by figures such as Yoko Ono, Teresa Margolles, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Jimmie Durham, alongside local Mayan-speaking creators.
Venues include the Casa de la Cultura del Mayab and the Centro Cultural Olimpo, as well as a former convent in Maní. The selection of Maní is intended as an act of cultural revitalization, given the site's historical connection to the destruction of Mayan codices. The project is supported by Fomento Cultural Banamex, Fundación La Cúpula, and Museo Jumex, with free admission offered to the public.
