Yucatán legend recounts sale of Virgen de Mamita

A local legend in Yucatán preserves the history of the Virgen de la Asunción, known as Nuestra Señora de Mamita, following a period of religious persecution. According to oral tradition and local accounts, the original religious image was sold by individuals including Mauricio Fuentes and Rey Chablé, assisted by certain teachers, to the community of Pustunich.

The legend states that the image was transported to Pustunich by being tied to a horse, while the Virgin's garments were buried near a location called Tecab. Local custodian Óscar Chablé notes that while the original image resides in another town, the legend serves as a point of unity and shared devotion between the towns of Mama and Pustunich rather than a source of division.
