Yucatán Materno Infantil Hospital Transfer to IMSS Sparks Protests

The state government of Yucatán announced a restructuring that would transfer the Hospital Materno Infantil in Mérida to the federal IMSS‑Bienestar system and shift obstetric services for non‑insured patients to the new O’Horán Hospital.

PRI women’s organization leader Diana Molina Aguiar warned that the move lacks signed agreements, could saturate the health system, and jeopardizes specialized maternal‑infant care, calling the action “institutional violence.” She and other PRI officials demanded legal and operational guarantees.

Mothers, lactating women, and health‑care workers protested outside the state palace, demanding that the hospital remain a dedicated maternity‑infant facility. Demonstrators said the O’Horán Hospital lacks the capacity, equipment, beds and staff to replace the specialized services and expressed uncertainty about their own employment under the new arrangement.
