Yucatán Peninsula faces surge in dengue cases and heat‑related deaths

Health officials in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula reported a 102% increase in dengue infections for the 2026 season, with 201 confirmed cases to date. Quintana Roo bears the brunt, accounting for 167 cases (over 80% of the total), while Campeche and Yucatán reported 18 and 16 cases respectively. Authorities have intensified fumigation, vector‑control operations and public warnings to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

In the same period, extreme heat has claimed six lives on the peninsula, including a recent fatality in Quintana Roo. The region recorded 63 heat‑related patients, comprising 46 heat‑stroke cases, 11 dehydration cases and six burns. Nationwide, the week of 19‑25 July saw 13 heat‑related deaths, the deadliest week of the season, with Baja California and Sonora also heavily affected. Health services continue to monitor and advise the public on heat‑risk prevention.
