Yucatán pushes Pueblos Mágicos to boost tourism

State officials in Yucatán are centering their tourism recovery strategy on the network of "Pueblos Mágicos," using the historic towns as the main draw for visitors. At a conference held at the Universidad Tecnológica Regional del Sur in the town of Tekax, Secretary of Tourism Darío Flota Ocampo emphasized that "El turismo yucateco necesita talento joven preparado para aprovechar las oportunidades que ofrecen los Pueblos Mágicos."

The program highlighted the Integral Training and Tourism Competitiveness Programme (PICCT) 2026, which will offer online courses for service providers and university students to professionalise the sector. The initiative aims to improve service quality, expand adventure‑tourism offerings such as the Grutas Chocantes, the Ermita de San Diego de Alcalá and local natural attractions, and ultimately increase visitor numbers to the south of the state.

University rector Melba Larizza Lugo praised the effort, noting that better‑trained graduates will become future entrepreneurs and managers in both public and private tourism enterprises.
