Yucatán records Mexico's second-lowest birth rate amid four-year decline
Yucatán has recorded the second-lowest birth rate in Mexico, following a continuous four-year decline. According to data from the national statistics agency, INEGI, the state recorded 35.9 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age in 2025. This represents a 17.7% decrease since 2021, when the rate was 43.6.
In absolute terms, Yucatán registered 23,609 births in 2025, which is approximately 16% fewer than the 28,064 births recorded in 2021. While the national birth rate in Mexico has remained relatively stable at 47.7 in recent years, Yucatán's rate continues to fall, creating an 11.8-point gap between the state and the national average.
The demographic shift is further evidenced by the average number of children per woman aged 12 and older, which has dropped from 2.7 in 1990 to 1.8 in 2025. Additionally, the state's median age rose from 30 to 32 between 2020 and 2025, indicating an aging population alongside declining fertility.
