Yucatán reports 89.6% increase in bee and wasp stings

Incidents of bee and wasp stings in Yucatán have increased by 89.6% in 2026, with 201 reported cases compared to 106 during the same period last year. According to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE), the total includes 178 bee stings and 23 wasp stings.

Men account for the majority of cases with 125 reported, while women represent 76. Yucatán currently leads the Yucatan Peninsula in these incidents, significantly outpacing neighboring states. Quintana Roo reported 60 cases (49 bees, 11 wasps) and Campeche reported 59 cases (51 bees, 8 wasps).

Recent incidents include an attack on the Chichí Suárez-Sitpach highway, where emergency responders had to travel on foot for over an hour to reach two victims in a difficult-to-access area. Authorities advise the public not to approach swarms or attempt to remove them independently.
