Yucatán residents block Tizimín–Río Lagartos highway to demand expansion
Residents of Río Lagartos and San Felipe have maintained a blockade on the federal Tizimín–Río Lagartos highway for two consecutive days. The protesters are demanding the expansion of the road to improve safety and reduce the frequency of accidents in the area.
The Government of Yucatán, led by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, has proposed a dialogue table to address these demands. State officials, including representatives from the Institute of Highway Infrastructure of Yucatán (INCAY) and local Mayor Yesenia Loría Marfil, met with protesters to discuss the issue. While the state government expressed readiness to mediate, an initial invitation to a working group was not accepted by the demonstrators.
Because the highway is under federal jurisdiction, the responsibility for expansion lies with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT). Currently, conservation works are underway on a 48.5 kilometer stretch of the Valladolid–Río Lagartos road, involving an investment of 42.46 million pesos. These works include resurfacing and leveling but do not include the road expansion requested by the community.
The Yucatán State Public Security Secretariat (SSP) has deployed agents to strategic points to manage traffic and direct drivers to alternative routes, including the Tizimín Periphery and the San Felipe–Río Lagartos junction.
