Yucatán suspends all economic and educational activities amid historic rains

On Tuesday 2 June 2026 the Government of Yucatán issued an extraordinary decree suspending all non‑essential economic activities, schools and public services across the state. Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena said the decision responded to severe flooding and water‑logged streets in municipalities such as Mérida, Umán and Halachó, where recent rains set a historic record – Mérida recorded 436.7 mm of rain in the previous seven days. The State Civil Protection Council, together with the Armed Forces and public safety agencies, imposed the shutdown to limit mobility and protect lives.

The suspension was lifted on Wednesday 3 June after a technical assessment showed a reduction in risk. Authorities allowed limited internal work (clean‑up, logistics, maintenance) while full classes and economic operations were slated to resume on 3 June. Forecasts indicated that the tropical wave 4 and a persistent low‑pressure trough would keep heavy showers in eastern, southern and southeastern Mexico, including Yucatán, through the week.

The extreme weather prompted warnings of flash floods, strong winds and occasional hail, and led to widespread road closures and property damage throughout the peninsula.
