Yuichiro Tamaki re-elected leader of Democratic Party for the People

Yuichiro Tamaki has been re-elected as the leader of the Democratic Party for the People for a third term. In a head-to-head election held during an extraordinary party convention in Tokyo, Tamaki secured a decisive victory over Mikihiko Hashimoto, a 30-year-old member of the House of Representatives.

Tamaki’s new term will run until the end of September 2029. He characterized this upcoming period as a time to prepare for governance, stating his goal is to make the party the largest opposition group in the House of Councillors by the 2028 election.

During his post-election press conference, Tamaki emphasized a strategy of independent party growth rather than simple political maneuvering, noting that he will not engage in “easy political alliances.” He stressed the importance of increasing the party's numbers to lead policy implementation proactively.
