Yuki Amami explores Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age in new documentary

Actress Yuki Amami held a press conference regarding her upcoming art mystery documentary, ‘Yuki Amami’s Art Mystery: Vermeer and the Mysteries of the 17th Century Dutch Golden Age,’ scheduled to broadcast on BS Asahi on September 6, 2026.

The program follows Amami’s journey through the Netherlands, including Delft, The Hague, and Amsterdam, to explore the life and works of Johannes Vermeer. During her six-day filming trip, she encountered six of Vermeer’s works, including the iconic ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring.’ Amami discussed the emotional impact of seeing the masterpiece and her observations on the artist’s recurring motifs, such as pearls, maps, and letters.

The documentary aims to uncover the historical context of the Dutch Golden Age, examining the economic, scientific, and international relations of the era. It also investigates mysteries surrounding Vermeer’s habit of altering his paintings and the relationship between the artist and his patrons. The broadcast coincides with the exhibition of ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, marking its first appearance in Japan in 14 years.
