Yuki Seno called to Nadeshiko Japan squad as manager promotes maternity support

Nadeshiko Japan manager Michihisa Kano has called up defender Yuki Seno to the national squad ahead of the upcoming Asian Games in Nagoya. Seno, a versatile player capable of playing as a center-back or defensive midfielder, was selected following an injury to defender Chisato Ichise.

Seno becomes only the second mother to be selected for the national team, following Tomomi Miyamoto. Having returned to competitive play in August after giving birth to her first child in March, her inclusion highlights the challenges and opportunities for professional athletes balancing motherhood and sport.

Manager Kano expressed a desire for such cases to become the “standard,” emphasizing the importance of creating environments where players, coaches, and staff can work confidently regardless of their family situations. The Japan Football Association (JFA) maintains a “Nadeshiko Japan Childcare Support System,” established in 2008, which covers the costs of babysitters during training camps and overseas expeditions. While it is undecided if Seno will utilize the system, the team plans to coordinate closely with her, her club, and the JOC to provide necessary support.
