Yukinari Sugawara joins Cagliari on loan from Southampton

Yukinari Sugawara has joined Cagliari on a loan deal with an option to buy, arriving from Southampton near the end of the summer transfer window. The Japanese defender, born in 2000, brings extensive European experience to the Serie A side, having previously played for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, Southampton in the Premier League, and Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Sugawara, primarily a right-back but capable of playing as a wing-back or central defender, noted that he accepted the move to Sardinia immediately despite the rapid decision-making process. He expressed pride in following in the footsteps of prominent Japanese players in Italy, such as Nakata, Honda, and Nagatomo.
