Yukio Edano expresses skepticism toward forming new political party

Former Japanese opposition leader Yukio Edano has expressed reluctance regarding the formation of a new political party. Speaking to supporters in Saitama, Edano suggested that political realignment may be counterproductive, stating, “Public distrust of political realignment is growing.”

Edano, a former chief cabinet secretary and founder of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), lost his House of Representatives seat during the February 8 general election while running with the Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA). The CRA, a coalition between members of the CDP and Komeito, was disbanded in September following a significant electoral defeat.

While some former CRA members have already established the Democratic Reform Party, Edano indicated a desire to return to the principles of the CDP. He noted that changing a party's name or structure is not an effective way to regain public trust and stated he intends to reach a final conclusion on his future political course based on the CDP's policies.
