Yum Brands implements AI and automation across 63,000 restaurants

Yum Brands, the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut, is implementing a large-scale digital transformation led by Global Chief Digital and Technology Officer Jim Dausch. The strategy focuses on using artificial intelligence and automation to optimize operations across approximately 63,000 global locations operated by 1,500 franchisees.

Key technological advancements include the ‘Byte’ platform, which has reportedly reduced out-of-stock items by 85%. At Pizza Hut, a new data-driven automation layer has improved delivery quality by synchronizing kitchen workflows with driver availability, ensuring food is prepared closer to the time of pickup to maintain temperature.

Additionally, digital kiosks are now present in roughly two-thirds of the company’s global locations, contributing to higher average transaction values. Dausch, who transitioned to the role from a background in the hospitality sector, aims to direct technology investments toward benefiting customers, employees, and franchisees by managing food and labor costs.
