Yunus Emre Institute expands Turkish language program in Romania
The ‘Tercihim Türkçe’ (My Choice is Turkish) project, organized by the Yunus Emre Institute, has commenced the 2026-2027 academic year in Romanian state schools. The launch ceremony took place at Middle School No. 169 in Bucharest, featuring cultural performances including Turkish and Romanian folk dances.
Turkish Ambassador to Bucharest, Özgür Kıvanç Altan, conducted the first Turkish language lesson for the students, focusing on basic introductory expressions. The project has seen significant growth since its inception in 2024; according to Yunus Emre Institute Romania Coordinator Mustafa Yıldız, the initiative has expanded from 6 schools and approximately 450 students to 25 schools and roughly 1,500 students.
In addition to language instruction, the program includes a ‘Sister School Project’ designed to facilitate mutual visits between students in Turkey and Romania, encouraging the practical application of language skills through cultural exchange.
