Yusril Ihza Mahendra calls for peace in Aceh following unrest

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has called for calm and peace in Aceh following recent unrest. The tension occurred during commemorations for the 21st anniversary of the Aceh Peace Day at the Masjid Raya Baiturrahman complex on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The incident began when groups attempted to hoist the Bulan Bintang flag, which is associated with the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). Security forces intervened to prevent the display, leading to clashes between the crowd and authorities.

Minister Yusril expressed hope that the situation has returned to a conducive state and urged all parties to maintain tranquility. He emphasized that the government respects all elements of Acehnese society who remain committed to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and stated that the government will work collectively to address existing social issues in the region to improve local conditions.
