Datti Baba-Ahmed discusses Tinubu's political influence and 2027 prospects

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, has made several controversial remarks regarding the Nigerian political landscape and the 2027 presidential election. In recent interviews, Baba-Ahmed stated that President Bola Tinubu’s political organization and ability to build alliances over 16 years make him a formidable contender, suggesting that “only God can stop” him from securing re-election.

Baba-Ahmed alleged that Tinubu wields immense influence over the political space, claiming the President could potentially frustrate opposition efforts to form a united front by installing leadership within rival parties. He also suggested that Tinubu might influence the selection of opposition candidates.

Following backlash from his comments that no leading contenders—including his former running mate, Peter Obi—possess the capacity to fix Nigeria, Baba-Ahmed clarified that his remarks were taken out of context. He maintained that his primary focus was on the need for a level playing field and urged the current administration to prepare for a fair transition of power. He also reaffirmed his personal relationship with Obi, describing him as his “boss.”

Additionally, the Centre for Leadership Legacy International criticized Baba-Ahmed for making unverified claims regarding Vice President Kashim Shettima’s personal spiritual choices, calling for an apology to avoid injecting religious matters into political discourse.
