Turkey targets $100 billion energy infrastructure investment

Turkey's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has announced a strategic roadmap for its energy sector, including a projected $100 billion investment in electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the goal is to meet the needs of a changing world, driven by electrification in transport, artificial intelligence, and data centers.

As of September 2026, Turkey's total installed electricity capacity reached 127,355 MW, with renewable energy sources accounting for 80,315 MW, or 63.1% of the total capacity. Domestic resources provided 70.3% of the electricity produced during the month. Hydroelectric power remains the leading source of production, contributing 26% of the total output.

Additionally, the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) is working to implement a National Smart Meter System (MASS). The initiative aims to bring approximately 7 million subscribers under remote meter reading capabilities by the end of 2027 to improve grid monitoring and technical quality data.
