Yuzu fruit remains scarce in German supermarkets despite rising recipe popularity

The citrus fruit yuzu is appearing more often on restaurant menus, drink lists and in home recipes across Germany, praised for its intense blend of mandarin, orange and lemon flavors. However, fresh yuzu is rarely stocked in major German grocery chains such as Rewe and Lidl, making it difficult for consumers to purchase the fruit itself.

The Verbraucherzentrale Bayern explains that yuzu is primarily cultivated in Japan and is expensive to import, so most German shoppers encounter it only as processed products – juice concentrate, sauces, pastes or dried peel sold in Asian specialty stores or online. Nutrition expert Andrea Danitschek advises consumers to read ingredient lists carefully to verify the actual yuzu content and to watch for added sugars or flavor enhancers. For a similar citrus note, she recommends using locally grown lemons, oranges or other European citrus fruits as cheaper alternatives.
