Yvonne Okwara leaves Citizen TV after 20-year journalism career

Veteran journalist Yvonne Okwara has announced her departure from Citizen TV, ending her eight-and-a-half-year tenure at the Royal Media Services-owned broadcaster. She made the announcement during the final edition of her weekly current affairs programme, ‘The Explainer’, on Tuesday, October 27.

The exit marks the conclusion of a nearly two-decade career in Kenyan media. Okwara’s professional journey began at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where she hosted a children’s programme, before she held roles at Hot 96, Nation Media Group, and KTN News.

During her time at Citizen TV, Okwara became known for incisive political interviews and in-depth analysis, having interviewed prominent figures including President William Ruto and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. While she did not disclose her next professional move, she stated she is moving to ‘build something else’ and is entering a new chapter.
