Z. 443 Mercator disappeared in 1967 with five Zeebrugge fishermen
The Belgian fishing vessel Z. 443 Mercator disappeared in October 1967 during an exceptionally severe storm in the North Sea. The ship, a typical Belgian trawler built in 1952 at the H. Zwart shipyard, departed from Zeebrugge on October 11 with five crew members on board.
Communication with the vessel ceased on the morning of October 17. Despite the disappearance, no wreckage was ever found, and the exact cause or final location of the ship remains unknown. The incident remains a poignant historical event for the families of the lost fishermen and the Zeebrugge community.
