Z. ai secures US$5 billion for European expansion

Hong Kong-listed artificial intelligence firm Z. ai has secured approximately US$5 billion (€4.6 billion) through a combination of share placement and convertible bond issuance. This follows a previous US$4 billion funding round in July 2026.

The Beijing-based company intends to use the capital to fuel an aggressive expansion into Portugal and the broader European market. Approximately €2.8 billion, or 60% of the funds, will be dedicated to developing next-generation AI models featuring autonomous self-learning capabilities.

The financing included the placement of roughly 22 million new H shares at HK$714 each, generating US$2 billion. Additionally, the company issued zero-coupon convertible bonds worth RMB 20.14 billion (US$3 billion) maturing in September 2027. Despite the capital influx, shares fell nearly 7% following the announcement as investors reacted to potential dilution.
