Zaandam apartment complex evacuated after explosion and fire

An explosion and subsequent fire at an apartment complex in Zaandam, specifically at the Hof van Zaenden, forced the evacuation of 18 homes during the early hours of Monday, August 17. The blast, which occurred around 01:40, caused significant structural damage, blowing out the rear facade of a third-floor apartment and damaging the unit directly below it. Debris and glass were scattered across the Heijermansstraat.

While the residents of the affected apartment were not home at the time, one woman sustained a foot injury from flying glass. Emergency services, including the police Explosives Reconnaissance Team (TEV), fire department, and medical officers, responded to the scene. Authorities are investigating the cause, with preliminary suspicions suggesting the use of Cobra firecrackers combined with flammable liquids.

Police have detained two minors found in a vehicle near the scene shortly after the incident. Witnesses reported seeing a car speeding away following the blasts. Stichting Salvage is assisting residents, and emergency shelter has been arranged for those unable to return to their homes immediately.
