Zaanstad warns wind turbines threaten Sluiskwartier housing plans

The municipality of Zaanstad has issued an urgent appeal to the North Holland Provincial Executive (Gedeputeerde Staten) regarding the planned construction of three large wind turbines near the Noorder IJ-plas. The local government warns that the turbines, which could reach heights of 200 meters, pose a significant threat to the feasibility of the Sluiskwartier housing project in the Achtersluispolder.

The Sluiskwartier development aims to create a high-density residential and commercial area featuring approximately 2,000 homes. This project has received national support, with the Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning designating the area as a ‘breakthrough location’ and €64 million being allocated for infrastructure and regional development.

Zaanstad argues that an environmental impact report indicates the turbines will negatively affect the living environment through noise, shadow flicker, and night lighting. The municipality contends that these developments were agreed upon with the national government and the province, and that the turbines could jeopardize the quality of life and the successful realization of these essential housing plans.
