Zacapa Mayor's daughter's luxury quinceañera sparks controversy

A lavish quinceañera celebration for the daughter of Zacapa Mayor Karen Xiomara Ovalle Madrid has drawn public scrutiny following viral social media posts. The event, held at a hotel in Chiquimula, featured high-end decorations including crystal lamps, large floral arrangements, a horse-drawn carriage, and a castle-themed cake.

The festivities included performances by national and international artists, such as Colombian singer Jessi Uribe, and featured custom designer gowns. One dress was created by a Mexican designer, while another was an exclusive piece by a Vietnamese haute couture designer known for dressing Miss Grand International finalists. Estimates suggest the dresses alone may cost between USD 8,000 and USD 17,000.

The scale of the event prompted questions regarding the source of the funding. Mayor Ovalle stated on social media that the celebration was supported by her family members. Additionally, the Guatemalan Ministry of Culture and Sports issued a statement clarifying that while members of the National Symphony Orchestra may perform individually, the institution itself does not participate in private parties, following reports of the orchestra's presence at the event.
