Zacatecas Governor suggests Bañuelos vehicle incident may be political self-attack

Zacatecas Governor David Monreal Ávila has suggested that the recent vehicle accident involving Senator Geovanna Bañuelos de la Torre's entourage might be a "self-attack" (autoatentado) intended for political promotion.

The incident occurred on August 7 on federal highway 23, where a white Chevrolet Suburban carrying staff members veered off the road and fell into a ravine. While the vehicle was totaled, no injuries were reported. Senator Bañuelos, who was traveling in a separate vehicle at the time, has categorically claimed the incident was intentional and has called for federal security intervention to determine criminal responsibility.

Governor Monreal stated that initial reports point to a traffic accident but promised a thorough investigation. He cautioned political actors against trivializing public security issues for political gain, noting that if a direct attack were confirmed, authorities would need to investigate why the group was targeted, questioning "what they are involved in" to face such an incident. He urged the Labor Party (PT) to provide all evidence to the competent prosecutor's office.
