Zacatecas mayors request increased highway security

Mayors from three municipalities in Zacatecas—Jalpa, Huanusco, and Tabasco—and one from Calvillo, Aguascalientes, have requested increased security along the Huanusco-Calvillo highway. In a joint statement, the officials called on Governor David Monreal to coordinate with the state's Public Security Secretariat and federal agencies, including the National Guard and the Secretariat of National Defense, to intensify patrols and surveillance in high-risk areas following reports of criminal activity.

In response, the Zacatecas state government, through Secretary General of Government Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, urged the municipalities to reinforce their local police forces and sign collaboration agreements with the state. The government noted that while the state's Peace Construction Table is continuously evaluating security conditions, including communication routes, the affected municipalities have thus far chosen not to sign these collaboration agreements, citing municipal autonomy.

The state government highlighted that the “SAGAZ” plan, conducted in coordination with Aguascalientes, has led to the detention of individuals linked to regional violence, including a local public security director. This request for intervention follows a period of heightened violence in Zacatecas, including recent incidents involving explosives and fatal shootings in other municipalities.
