Zacatecas reports 91% reduction in intentional homicides
General Arturo Medina Mayoral, Secretary of Public Security for Zacatecas, reported a 91 percent reduction in intentional homicides over a four-year period. According to data presented to the state legislature, the number of homicides dropped from 1,741 in 2021 to 149 in 2025.
Medina Mayoral stated that the state is currently in the fourth and final phase of its pacification strategy, which focuses on consolidation. The security strategy has involved over 545,000 operations, resulting in the dismantling of 169 criminal cells, 135 illegal camps, and nine laboratories.
To support these efforts, annual investment in the Secretariat of Public Security has nearly doubled, rising from 1,296 million pesos in 2022 to over 2,534 million pesos in 2025. In the first half of 2026, the daily average of homicides decreased by 61.8 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
